Anthropic acquired stealth biotech AI startup Coefficient Bio in a $400 million all-stock deal confirmed on April 3, 2026. Coefficient Bio was an approximately 10-person, 8-month-old startup founded by former Genentech Prescient Design members with computational drug-discovery expertise. Co-founders include CTO Nathan Frey, formerly a principal scientist at Biogen, and Joyce Hong, formerly a principal at Roivant Sciences. Coefficient Bio will be integrated into Anthropic's Claude for Life Sciences platform, targeting target identification, compound screening, and clinical R&D. Separately, Anthropic acquired a single-person company that had used Claude to coordinate drug-development research across 11 laboratories, with early mouse-study results described as promising. On the program side, Anthropic's AI for Science initiative, launched in May 2025, provides free API credits to researchers: up to $20,000 over six months for standard applicants and up to $50,000 for rare disease projects. The program has expanded to distribute credits through major scientific funders including the US National Science Foundation, Simons Foundation, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and Schmidt Sciences, as well as research institutions including the Wellcome Sanger Institute, Francis Crick Institute, EMBL, and Space Telescope Science Institute. Named research projects include FlyWire at Princeton, gnomAD at the Broad Institute, and LEAP at Columbia. Anthropic also partnered with HHMI Janelia Research Campus on the Model Hardware Standard, described as a shared specification allowing AI agents to operate lab instruments safely.
