OpenAI announced acquisition of Orchestra Bio
OpenAI Acquires Orchestra Bio for Biopharma Drug Coordination AI
The acquisition extends OpenAI's Rosalind platform from science-side tools into the operational and coordination layer of drug development. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have now acquired specialist biology teams within months of each other.
The full picture
OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a startup that builds AI agents for coordinating drug development programs across departments, contractors, and disconnected software. Orchestra Bio's agents monitor studies and timelines, and when a disruption such as a failed manufacturing batch occurs, map which trials are affected and surface response options for program leaders. OpenAI will integrate Orchestra Bio's team and technology into Rosalind, its existing life sciences AI suite, which includes GPT-Rosalind for biological and chemical reasoning and Rosalind Workbench for connecting models to lab tools and data. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. OpenAI described the combined effort as aimed at connecting scientific findings with the operational decisions needed to move potential treatments forward. Anthropic acquired Coefficient Bio for roughly $400M in stock in April 2026.
