Electrician Shortage Bottlenecks AI Data Center Construction in the US

A structural shortage of electricians is constraining AI data center construction across the US. A single facility can require up to 1,500 workers at peak construction, and electrician-driven delays can cost up to $300,000 per hour in stalled commissioning. Meta, which has committed to roughly $600 billion in US data center development by 2028, launched America's Workforce Academy in June 2026 with $115 million, offering free five-week bootcamps in electrical and other trades with guaranteed job offers from contractor partners before training begins. Skilled trades wages have risen roughly 30% over four years, with experienced data center electricians in high-demand markets reporting total compensation of $240,000-$280,000.
