BioBasicsBench wet-lab AI benchmark

The gist

Latest: OpenAI and Ligo Release BioBasicsBench, 100-Task Wet-Lab AI Benchmark

The benchmark is designed to track progress relevant to scientific research, biosafety, and biosecurity. OpenAI stated that accelerating biological research starts with getting the everyday work right, and that BioBasicsBench shows where models need to improve.

The full picture

OpenAI, in collaboration with biotech firm Ligo, released BioBasicsBench, a 100-task benchmark that evaluates AI agents on routine wet-lab science tasks drawn from real experiments. The benchmark presents agents with raw biological data including gel photos, colony plates, microscopy images, sequencing reads, and bench videos, then scores them on whether they can interpret that data, identify errors, and recognize when evidence does not support a conclusion. Rubrics award partial credit. GPT-6 Astra scored 66.7% on the benchmark compared to 43.8% for GPT-5.6 Sol, with Astra using roughly half the output tokens per task as the older model.

OpenAI and biotech firm Ligo released BioBasicsBench on November 6, 2026, a 100-task benchmark that tests AI agents on routine wet-lab work using raw biological data including gel photos, colony plates, microscopy images, sequencing reads, and bench videos.

Agents are scored on interpreting data, identifying errors, and recognizing when evidence does not support a conclusion, with rubrics awarding partial credit. GPT-6 Astra scored 66.7% against 43.8% for GPT-5.6 Sol, with Astra using roughly half the output tokens per task. OpenAI framed the benchmark as a way to track what model gains mean for scientific progress, biosafety, and biosecurity.
