OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on September 3, 2026 as a limited preview for trusted partners, then broadened access to paid ChatGPT plans and the API on September 4. The model carries a context window of over one million tokens, with pricing at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, approximately 2.5x the cost of GPT-5.6 Sol. Independent testing by Artificial Analysis found that while Astra uses about 10% fewer output tokens than Sol on general intelligence benchmarks, total cost per task is still roughly 75% higher. Artificial Analysis documented six model variants under the Astra line, ranging from a low-cost option to a max tier that scores 61 on their Intelligence Index, with pricing varying up to 3.6x across the range. Early access was restricted to a small set of organizations via a program called Daybreak Access, with GitHub Copilot reaching general availability with the model. OpenAI delayed the release after a Hugging Face incident in July 2026 to add safeguards; the public version rejects certain prompts in cybersecurity areas, and cyber-sensitive capabilities are gated behind a trusted-access program disabled by default for Enterprise users.
