Gartner prediction of 80% neocloud consolidation by 2030 reported, citing $4T-plus write-down risk and $8.5T vs $3.6T revenue gap
Gartner: 80% of Neocloud Providers Will Fail or Merge by 2030
A projected $4T-plus write-down risk across AI infrastructure signals structural overcapacity in the neocloud sector. Enterprise buyers relying on neoclouds for digital sovereignty use cases would face a shrinking set of independent providers.

The full picture
Gartner predicts more than 80% of neocloud AI infrastructure providers will cease independent operations by 2030, driven by a massive gap between capital expenditure and recoverable revenue. Gartner projects AI data center owners would need $8.5T in cumulative revenue through 2030 to cover announced capex, financing costs, and a 12% return on invested capital, but forecasts attributable AI revenue of no more than $3.6T. That leaves more than $4T in asset value facing potential write-down risk through 2032. The 200-plus neocloud firms face compounding pressure as debt markets have cut off financing for companies lacking substantial revenue independent of AI data centers. Gartner notes that ceasing independent operations does not necessarily mean compute assets disappear, as outcomes may include acquisition, partnerships, or outright failure. Hyperscalers face lower risk due to diversified revenue streams.
