Jensen Huang and the Megaspeed spy allegations

The gist

Latest: Senator Warren Demands Nvidia Answer Congress Over Chinese Spy Allegations

Active government investigations in two countries, combined with congressional pressure on Nvidia, raise direct questions about the effectiveness of US chip export controls and how closely Nvidia tracks where its chips end up. The scale of purchases attributed to Megaspeed affiliates illustrates how restrictions can be routed around through third-country intermediaries.

The full picture

Senator Elizabeth Warren called on Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and the company's board to answer to Congress after reporting that a suspected Chinese intelligence asset maintained a close relationship with Huang and allegedly passed information directly to Beijing. The US Commerce Department and Singapore Police Force are separately investigating Megaspeed, a Singapore data center company that spun off from a Chinese gaming company in 2023, for allegedly helping Chinese companies circumvent US export controls on advanced Nvidia chips, with investigators examining whether chips were routed indirectly through data centers in Malaysia and Indonesia that remotely serve Chinese customers. Alice Huang, also known as Huang Le, a senior Megaspeed executive, has been identified by US officials as a Chinese intelligence asset suspected of steering advanced Nvidia chips into China in violation of export controls and gathering commercial information for Beijing. A Malaysian Megaspeed affiliate purchased at least $4.8 billion of AI equipment containing Nvidia chips between June 2024 and February 2026, and Megaspeed was reportedly set to purchase an additional $2 billion in Nvidia technology over the following year. President Trump was briefed but took no action. No charges have been announced. Nvidia denied Jensen Huang had any knowledge of spying and described Megaspeed as a typical regional customer. Megaspeed denied wrongdoing, hired outside counsel, and said it would cooperate with US authorities.
