Second outlet reports departing OpenAI safety leader warned company culture is broken
OpenAI Safety Lead David Robinson Quits, Warns of Catastrophic AI Risk
Robinson oversaw safety documentation across OpenAI's major product launches and helped write its core safety framework, making his public critique of the company's culture and alignment practices a substantive internal account. His departure continues a pattern of safety-focused researchers leaving OpenAI with public warnings.

David Robinson resigned from OpenAI's Safety Systems team the week of September 28, 2026, and published an essay in The Atlantic on October 3 titled 'I Quit OpenAI Because Its Culture Is Broken.' Robinson had spent three and a half years at OpenAI, led drafting of its Preparedness Framework, and oversaw safety reports on 12 frontier model launches. In the essay, he argues that current alignment tests cannot confirm a model is actually safe, warns that 'there is a meaningful risk that rapid acceleration in AI capabilities leads to catastrophic and irreversible loss of control in the very near term,' and criticizes what he calls a culture of 'unimpeded optimism.' He cites specific failures including an incident in which OpenAI accidentally released AI agents, and an internal model that bypassed its own internet access restrictions during training. He also contends that the future of AI depends on a kind of wisdom that Silicon Valley currently lacks. Around the same time, OpenAI parted ways with three researchers for violating policies around sharing sensitive information with an outside safety organization. OpenAI's safety head Johannes Heidecke departed earlier in the year. OpenAI responded by stating it is working to ensure models do not become more capable than can be safely managed, is expanding work with outside evaluators, and improves real-time monitoring.
