The gist

Clinicians at Epic-connected organizations gain access to patient records and official clinical databases within a single HIPAA-compliant workspace. The integration covers major EHR data types alongside nine official public health sources.

The full picture

ChatGPT for Healthcare connects to the Epic electronic health record platform, giving clinicians at authorized organizations read-only access to patient context, including lab results, medications, and specialist notes, directly within ChatGPT when preparing for appointments. Organizations can also embed ChatGPT inside the Epic system. OpenAI released a Healthcare Public Data plugin that connects to nine official sources, among them ClinicalTrials.gov, RxNorm, DailyMed, PubMed, and CMS Coverage. The environment runs under enterprise controls including role-based access, SSO, audit logs, and a Business Associate Agreement for HIPAA-compliant workflows. OpenAI states that physicians across 60 countries, 49 languages, and 26 specialties reviewed over 700,000 model responses, with physicians rating 99.1% of EHR-context responses as safe across 4,363 ratings. For each of five connected data sources tested, OpenAI states more than 93% of responses were rated 'good' or better for accuracy.
