Additional reporting confirmed the deal as a revenue-sharing agreement and named the resulting model GPT-Synopsys.
OpenAI and Synopsys Announce GPT-Synopsys Chip Design AI
The partnership gives OpenAI a path into domain-specific semiconductor engineering software through access to Synopsys's EDA tooling. The deal establishes a model architecture explicitly built to operate industry EDA tools as an expert engineer would, rather than wrapping a general model around existing software.
The full picture
OpenAI and Synopsys signed a multi-year strategic agreement on September 30, 2026 to jointly develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized AI model optimized to operate Synopsys's electronic design automation tools for semiconductor chip design workflows. The model is designed to reason about chip design and verification and directly operate Synopsys's EDA tools, functioning as an expert user of those tools rather than a general-purpose model connected to them. GPT-Synopsys will run on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure and integrate with Synopsys.ai and Synopsys's Autopilot agentic AI platform. Engineers will be able to delegate design objectives such as PPA optimization and timing closure to agents that run tools, interpret results, and iterate toward verified outcomes. The offering will bundle compute, the model, and tool licenses together as a single package. The deal includes a revenue-sharing arrangement; financial terms have not been published. Customer design data used within the system will not be used to train the model and will be encrypted at rest and in transit with configurable retention, audit, and permission controls.
