NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani imposed a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI for grades 2K through 8th grade, covering nearly 600,000 students. Companion chatbots are banned across all grades. At the high school level, up to 50,000 students may participate in five teacher-supervised AI pilots, and all high schoolers receive twice-yearly AI literacy instruction. Teachers may use approved AI tools for planning and administrative work; the city recommends no more than 30 to 45 minutes of daily one-to-one screen time depending on grade level. The city will reevaluate the policy at year's end with teachers, parents, and students. Los Angeles Unified has also blocked generative AI for every student on district devices. NYC previously banned ChatGPT after its 2022 launch, later replacing it with a custom AI teaching assistant.
