Meta and Microsoft Cut Internal Claude Usage Sharply

The gist

Two of the largest technology companies are pulling back substantially from Anthropic's Claude for internal employee use. The reductions at Meta and Microsoft involve shifts toward proprietary in-house tools rather than third-party AI services.

The full picture

Meta's employee use of Anthropic's Claude Code fell from about 60,000 to about 30,000 users as staff shifted to Meta's in-house MetaCode and Muse Code tools. Microsoft cut per-employee AI budgets in its 60,000-person cloud and AI group from $100,000 to about $10,000 per month, and reduced its projected internal Claude spending for the year by more than a third from a baseline of at least $1 billion. Separately, Microsoft was on pace to spend at least $2 billion annually on Anthropic models to power Copilot AI features for customers of its productivity software, and has swapped out some of its own models for Claude in Copilot.
