Karpathy publicly described building and deploying HackerTube in roughly two hours using Claude Opus 5.5
Karpathy Built HackerTube from 43M HN Comments in Two Hours With Claude
The project is a concrete example of a solo developer compressing what Karpathy described as work that would normally take weeks or months into a two-hour session using an AI coding assistant. It also produces a publicly available dataset others can reuse.

Andrej Karpathy used Claude Opus 5.5 to analyze 43 million Hacker News comments spanning 20 years, extract 6,454 YouTube video recommendations engineers had repeatedly made, and build and deploy a browsable website called HackerTube. The project took roughly two hours on Claude's Medium effort setting. Karpathy's only manual steps were creating a Google Cloud API key, spinning up a VPS, and buying the domain; Claude handled data analysis, code writing, security hardening, and deployment. HackerTube uses a representative mid-video frame as its thumbnail rather than A/B-tested uploads and avoids algorithmic recommendations. The underlying comment-analysis data is available as a zip file for others to build their own versions.
