Anthropic Launches Cyber Mission: CIDP and Free OSS Scanner

The gist

Operational technology systems in critical infrastructure often cannot be taken offline to patch, leaving known vulnerabilities unresolved for years while state-sponsored adversaries build persistent footholds. Open-source software underpins nearly all software but is often maintained by small volunteer teams with limited security resources.

The full picture

Anthropic announced its Cyber Mission on October 8, 2026, comprising two programs. The Critical Infrastructure Defense Program (CIDP) pairs Claude models and on-site engineers with 11 founding partners, including Accenture, Booz Allen, CrowdStrike, Deloitte, Dragos, Hitachi, Insane Cyber, Nozomi Networks, Palo Alto Networks, PwC, and Rockwell Automation, to help defend power grids, water systems, and transportation networks from cyberattacks. Separately, Anthropic released OSS Scanner, a free opt-in service that uses Claude to periodically scan open-source projects for vulnerabilities and deliver model-generated reports, including proof-of-concept exploits, explanations, and suggested fixes, directly to maintainers without human review.
